THE HISTORIC CENTRE OF TRUJILLO


Currently the historic center of Trujillo is bordered by the España Avenue, it may find many buildings dating from the colonial and republican periods, between attractions offered by the historic center of Trujillo we have the following:

  • Plaza de Armas (main square), is surrounded by the Cathedral, colonial mansions and Republican harmonious. In the center stands the Freedom Monument (Trujillo), which represents the process of independence. The statue was made in France, the materials used are marble and copper, the sculptor was Edmund Moeller.



  • The Cathedral, built between 1647 and 1666, their altars are Baroque and Rococo style, preserved the paintings belong to the Cuzco school of painting and Quito school. The cathedral has the Cathedral Museum with mostly religious works of the colonial era gold and silver.

  • Casa del Mayorazgo or Casa Tinoco (House Tinoco), built in the 16th century by the owners of the first sugar factory of Facalá. There he designed the first flag of independence in 1820, is located on a corner of Pizarro and Bolognesi streets. The main entrance is located on the Pizarro Jr. 314. This historical monument shows beautiful balconies on both fronts.

  • Casa Calonge or Urquiaga, built in a neoclassical style, between the 18th and 19th centuries, Simon Bolivar stayed in this house, from which organized much of his campaign and issued decrees declaring emancipation Trujillo Capital of the Republic of Peru and creating the Superior Court of Justice. You can see the desk used by Bolivar, gold ornaments of the Chimu culture, as well as period furniture.

  • Casa Ganoza, for its architecture, the house is very representative of Trujillo. The house is known for the cover of the lions as its Baroque is crowned by a pediment Rococo and two lions.

  • Casa of Emancipation, This house served as headquarters of the First Constitutional Congress and government house of former President Jose de la Riva Agüero.

FESTIVALS

1. Marinera festival
It is a Peruvian cultural event that takes place every January in the city of Trujillo.
     The event focuses on a marinera contest, a traditional dance of the city. The festival has parades, presentations and Peruvian Paso horse contest.
     Both the Marinera as the Peruvian Paso horse have been declared cultural heritage of the nation by the Peruvian government. This festival is one of the most important and representative cultural events in the country and of the city of Trujillo, for that reason, it has been recognized by the Peruvian government as the National Capital of the Marinera by Law No. 24,447, January 24 1986.

2. Semana Jubilar de Trujillo
It takes place the first week of March. There are craft fairs, parades, seminars, contest of typical dishes, gala evening, verbena (popular party) and the International Book Fair (from 1st to March 10th in the Plazuela del Recreo)

3. International Spring Festival
It is considered the representative festival of the city , takes place between September and October of each year, the main attraction is a traditional art car parade with beauty queens from around the continent, the first festival was held in 1950; the festival activities are the coronation of the Queen of the spring, the Peruvian Paso horse contest, the parade of foreign queens and the spring parade through the main avenues of the city. The festival closes with a private party organized by the Lions Club of Trujillo.

4.Concurso Regional del Caballo de paso Peruano

The contest is organized by the Association of Breeders and Owners of Peruvian Paso Horses of La Libertad region. The competition takes place in the International Spring Festival between September and October and also in the International Festival of the Marinera in January.


5. Independence Day of Trujillo

It is celebrated on December 29 each year to commemorate the day of the proclamation of Trujillo, being official holiday on that day throughout the province. The hoisting of flags is performed in the Plaza de Armas of Trujillo and also many cultural and artistic activities in celebration. It is a representative date of citizenship.

The word casino comes from the Italian word casino, house in the country. It seems that originally there were some villas in the field that were used as a place of recreation for the nobility and the upper middle class. One of these entertainment were games of chance. CULTURAL CENTERS

They are places that maintain activities that promote culture among its inhabitants. Some houses of culture have libraries, workshops, courses and other activities usually free or affordable price for the community.

1. Teatro Municipal de Trujillo

The main cultural scenery of the northern city with capacity for 408 people perfectly located in levels that has the place. Also has piano room , ballet room and all facilities necessary for art and culture can be together in our cultural space.




2. Virgilio Rodríguez Nache Theatre 

It is one of the most important cultural centers of the region where about 50 performances are developed per a year. They offer presentations of plays, poetry readings, music concert, classical, modern and folk dances. It has a capacity of 130 people.

VEGETARIAN FOOD

The vegetarian practice has different subgroups, so it is important decide what to stop eating: there are lacto-ovo vegetarians, who consume animal protein from eggs, milk and derivatives; and people who dont eat products derived from animals, known as vegans; who have a philosophy of life more strict. Although critics of vegetarianism say that lack of meat in the diet can be harmful to health, recent researches at the University of Loma Linda (California) shows that people who eat more vegetables, can live up to eight years longer than those who consume animal protein.
